Shocking moment driver mounts busy cycle lane as multiple cyclists narrowly avoid collision during London rush hour
  • last year
A driver was filmed mounting a two-way cycle lane in central London during rush hour forcing many cyclists into the road to avoid a collision. The footage was captured during on cyclist's commute home on Royal Mint Street towards Cable Street. The vehicle is seen going across the junction and instead of going into the lane designated for cars, it goes onto the bi-directional cycle lane. The filmer is heard shouting "oi" and ringing their bell repeatedly as cyclists coming from the other direction come to a halt and avoid the oncoming vehicle before it eventually rejoins the correct lane. The filmer told SWNS: "I was cycling home from work, it’d be about a 20-minute ride, when I noticed the driver enter the cycle lane. "While it did look like an accident, the driver took quite a long time to leave, despite several dropped curbs along the way. "I was worried more for cyclists coming in other direction than my own safety as it’s a bidirectional cycle lane, and I was very worried when cyclists had to take evasive action. "From what others have said since posting it’s a regular occurrence on this section. The filemr who goes by @Cycling_In_LDN online is a regular bicycle commuter and posts many incidents highlighting what it's like to cycle in the capital. "I started the TikTok to highlight the positives about cycling in London - good infrastructure in places, safety in numbers as more people cycle etc - as well as the negatives, and it’s important to note how drivers can put cyclists at risk despite what should be clear and safe infrastructure."
