Pope names 13 new cardinals, including first African-American

Pope Francis has made a surprise announcement, naming a group of new cardinals who will assist him and choose his eventual successor.

Mok-yeon, the pope has named 13 new cardinals.
This was a surprise announcement Sunday,... which came as he addressed pilgrims at the Vatican.
"On November 28th, on the eve of the first Sunday of Advent, I will hold a Consistory for the appointment of 13 new Cardinals."
Nine of the new electors are under the age of 80, and thus eligible to elect his successor.
They include Washington D.C. Archbishop Wilton Gregory, who would become the first African American to earn the coveted red hat.
There are also one each from Rwanda and Brunei the first cardinals to be elected from the countries.
No details were given about the concistory ceremony due travel restrictions still in place due to COVID-19.
Cardinals are the high church officials who rank next below the pope to assist him.
