Good morning to our viewers across the globe, you're watching Arirang's 'The World Now'. I'm Kim Jae-hee.
France, following its allies the U.S. and the UK, has again slammed China for its mistreatment of the country's Uighur minority.
France's foreign minister on Tuesday condemned China over the issue, and said France wants independent observers led by the United Nations to evaluate the treatment of the Muslim minority.
This follows his previous remark on July 21st, speaking to lawmakers in parliament.
"We are simply asking that China allows independent international observers into the area and that they also allow the (U.N.) high commissioner for human rights to visit the Xinjiang region freely."
The ethnic Muslim group in China is allegedly subjected to gross human rights' violations.
According to U.S. officials and UN experts, around one million Uighurs are being detained in "concentration camps" in China.
The French foreign minister asked for the closure of these camps, saying the practices there go against all the global human rights conventions.
The move comes after the U.S. slapped sanctions on senior Chinese officials, and restricted 11 Chinese firms for their involvement in human rights violations earlier this month.
Despite mounting global criticism, China has dismissed the accusations,... claiming that the camps are "reeducation camps" aimed at eradicating extremism and helping people gain new skills.
