Hi, for theater-lovers who are looking for an uplifting musical for this week, I would like to recommend 'Jamie'. It's based on the true story of a boy trying to make his dream come true,... and it's the Asian premiere of the musical which was a big hit in the UK.
Let's take a look.
This is a story of a teenager trying to be who they really are.
Jamie New is a 17-year-old boy from England who wants to become a drag queen.
Yet, harsh and prejudicial remarks from people have made it hard for him to find his true identity.
But with support from his mother and best friend, he finds a way and eventually becomes what he always wanted to be.
Based on the BBC documentary ‘Jamie: Drag Queen at 16',..the musical, originally titled 'Everybody's Talking About Jamie' was a huge hit in London's West End.
But now, 'Jamie' has arrived in Korea, and held its Asian premiere in Seoul last weekend.
The musical showcases some truly unique acting performances along with joyous music played on stage by a live band.
The British production team couldn't come to Korea due to COVID-19 so they worked with the Korean production team online to make sure every aspect of the production, from props to lighting, matched the original.
The production team as well as Jo Kwon, who is cast in the lead role as Jamie, say they hope the musical can be a chance for every 'Jamie' out there to be brave.
"Aside from subjects like becoming a drag queen and identity issues, I just want people who are fighting against prejudice to be confident and brave by seeing how Jamie makes his dream come true."
'Jamie' runs until September 11th,... and can be seen at LG Arts Center located in the Gangnam-gu District of Seoul.
Sounds very interesting. Are there other cultural events worth checking out?
The musical 'Rent' is another great performance. It depicts struggling artists in New York's East Village. Under the motto 'No day but today',... these artists stay optimistic even when the outlook is bleak.
Fans of ballet can enjoy 'Onegin' by Universal Ballet. It's a tragic love story based on a Russian novel, and set to the music of Tchaikovsky.
Those looking for something more experimental, 'Searchwright' is just the ticket. Rather than just watching the performance, the audience is involved in actually *making the performance as it happens.
COVID-19 is changing the way we enjoy performances. In fact, people will be able to enjoy contemporary ballet at a drive-in theater every day until Sunday. It's on from 8 PM at Sungkyunkwan University in Seoul. Those who want to watch should make a reservation.
Other performances have gone online. 'Unboxing' highlights performances fusing 'talchum' traditional Korean mask dances, with other styles. It's on Seoul Namsan
