The U.S. economy has also been hit hard by the COVID-19 pandemic.
Both consumption and production showed the worst numbers in history for April.
The U.S. Commerce Department announced on Friday that retail sales last month had dropped 16-point-4 percent on-month.
This is the biggest on-month drop recorded since 1992 when the data started being collected, meaning that consumption by Americans has practically stopped.
Industrial production also saw the worst ever drop of 11-point-2 percent on-month in April.
