S. Korea, Japan to hold 2nd round of talks over WTO dispute

South Korea's trade ministry says officials from Seoul and Tokyo will hold bilateral consultations at the WTO later this month.

The second round of bilateral talks between South Korea and Japan over Tokyo's export restrictions will take place at the WTO in Geneva on November 19th.
(Chung Hae-kwan), Director General for Trade Legal Affairs from the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will sit down for discussions with his Japanese counterpart.
In a statement, South Korea's trade ministry said it will implement procedures required for the WTO's dispute settlement and do its utmost to resolve Japan's export restriction measures.
Seoul and Tokyo held their first round of talks last month at the WTO but failed to reach an agreement.
In July, Japan imposed export curbs on three key materials to Seoul that are used by Korean companies to produce semiconductors and display panels.
The South Korean government in September filed a complaint with the WTO, saying Japan's move goes against the principle of free trade and is inconsistent with its obligations under various WTO agreements.
Under WTO rules, nations in a dispute are mandated to launch bilateral discussions within 30 days of filing a complaint.
If a resolution is not reached within 60 days of filing of a petition, a WTO dispute settlement panel can be set up.
