Ex-U.S. nuke envoy says interim deal necessary for N. Korea's step-by-step denuclearization
  • 5 years ago
A former U.S. official says the only way to denuclearize North Korea is through comprehensive measures, including an interim deal for a step-by-step dismantling of the regime's nuclear weapons.
This is according to Joseph Yun, the ex-U.S. Special Representative for North Korea policy, in an interview this week with Seoul-based Yonhap News Agency.
He said the North should offer a roadmap to satisfy Washington... and give up more than just its Yeongbyeon nuclear facility... the Dongchang-ri missile site and Punggye-ri nuclear test site, which it has already put on the table.
On the U.S. side, Yun suggested some form sanctions relief in return... as well as declaring a formal end to the Korean War... replacing the current armistice.
