Typhoon Lingling to hit South Korea starting Friday

태풍 '링링' 북상 중..오늘부터 한반도 영향권

We begin with Typhoon Lingling, which is fast approaching the Korean Peninsula.
It's expected to be one of the strongest typhoons ever to hit South Korea, bringing torrential rain and strong winds.
The government has its eyes fixed on the storm's projected path... while advising the public to take precaution... as the winds will be strong enough to knock down trees.
Lee Min-sun has our top story. The heavy rain that poured down Thursday over most parts of South Korea has stopped in most areas. But Typhoon Lingling is quickly getting closer, bringing more rain and strong winds.
Lingling is a medium-sized typhoon with a maximum wind speed of 145 to 180 kilometers per hour strong enough to knock down trees.
As of this afternoon, it's around 500 kilometers south of Jeju Island.
By Saturday morning, it'll be west of Jeju and then close to Seoul by the afternoon.
Jeju and the waters around it are under a typhoon advisory, and the rest of the country is under a preliminary typhoon warning.
Through Saturday, some parts of Jeju will get more than 400 millimeters of rain, while parts of Jeolla-do Province and the west of Chungcheongnam-do Province will get over 150 millimeters.
Typhoon Lingling is expected to be one of the strongest typhoons South Korea's ever seen, though other storms have caused severe damage before. Typhoon Gonpas, in 2010, followed a similar route to Lingling, killed 6 people and caused more than 130 million U.S. dollars in damage.
But Lingling is even closer to the Peninsula and has stronger winds.
The South Korean government is operating the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters twenty-four-seven.
"Typhoon Lingling will sweep past South Korea on Saturday and then move over North Korea and China on Sunday.
Lee Min-sun Arirang News."
