President Moon Jae-in begins his three-nation tour to Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos on Sunday, September 1st.
This week-long tour to Southeast Asia comes ahead of the special summits that South Korea is scheduled to hold later this year.
"We anticipate it to be an important opportunity for the president to fulfil his promise to visit all ten ASEAN nations within his term, and solidify the basis for cooperation to successfully host the South Korea-ASEAN special summit and the South Korea-Mekong summit in Busan this November."
President Moon's first destination -- Thailand.
Thailand is the Chair of ASEAN this year and a key part of Moon's 'New Southern Policy'.
It's the first official visit to the country by a South Korean President in seven years.
With the two sides having celebrated their 60th year of bilateral relations last year,... President Moon, with his counterpart Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha will work to further such relations,... especially in the economic sector.
"Thailand is the second largest ASEAN economy with a population of 69-million. Its total volume of trade with Korea amounts to 14-billion dollars, the sixth among ASEAN nations so there’s great potential for expanded economic cooperation."
During his trip to Thailand, President Moon will deliver a keynote speech at a bilateral forum centered on the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
He will also attend a showcase that focuses on the two countries' cooperation regarding digital life, bio-health, smart factories, and future generation cars.
And there, South Korean company 'Brand K' is to hold its global launch event during the trip.
This is expected to help more Korean startups and smaller businesses enter the Thai market.
"And amid growing economic uncertainties stemming from the trade disputes between Korea and Japan and between the U.S. and China,... enhanced economic ties with ASEAN are becoming all the more crucial. This trip is seen to have great potential in terms of helping President Moon achieve those closer ties. Park Hee-jun, Arirang News."
