Photographer Lim An-na won the photo folio review at the Arles International Photography Festival.
She became the first South Korean to receive the honor.
Kan Hyeong-woo gets us better acquainted with the artist.
Director Bong Joon-ho's Palme d'Or win at the Cannes Film Festival back in May showed how far South Korean cinema has come since its humble beginning a century ago.
Now, Korean photography has taken the torch… with Lim An-na winning the photo folio review award at the Arles International Photography Festival and becoming the first South Korean to do so.
"To me, photography is important because it is a type of medium that asks questions on what we see and feel."
The Rencontres d'Arles has taken place every summer since 1970 and is one of the largest and most renowned photography festivals in the world.
At this year's festival, over three-hundred photographers submitted their photo series.
But it was Lim An-na who caught the reviewer's attention.
"I'm really happy, of course, but I really didn't expect to win. I'm already looking forward to next year's exhibition at the Arles photography festival."
Lim's 'Rehearsal of Anxiety' series sheds light on how South Koreans are affected by media reports on North Korea's nuclear issues… expressing how each individual can experience psychological distance between anxiety and insensitivity from the fear of threats.
"Lim An-na’s award-winning photos will be on display here at the Ryugaheon gallery in Seoul through Sunday to provide Korean photographers with fresh ideas and inspiration. Kan Hyeong-woo, Arirang News."
