Starting next year, France will charge what it calls an "eco tax" for all flights leaving the country.
Paris says the revenue will be used to finance eco-friendly public transport in France.
The amount of tax levied will range between one and 20 U.S. dollars, depending on the flight destination and the type of ticket bought.
France is also pushing for an end to global tax exemptions on jet fuel to reduce CO2 emissions.
The UK and Germany have already implemented "eco" taxes, with other countries looking to follow suit.
