The India Meteorological Department said tropical Cyclone Fani hit the eastern state of Odisha at around 8 a.m. local time..., bringing heavy rain and winds reaching some 2-hundred kilometers per hour.
Around 1-point-2 million people have evacuated...and local news outlets are reporting outages in many parts of the state.
India's army, navy and air force were on alert to support rescue operations.
The cyclone is likely to weaken as it moves toward West Bengal and Bangladesh.
