It's Friday afternoon, so that means it's time for an in-depth look at the market action today... and for the week.
For that I'm joined by Dr. Kim Sei-wan, Professor of Economics at Ewha Woman's University.
Thanks for coming in today, Dr. Kim.
You're welcome.
So this week we have the huge decline in earnings at Samsung Electronics, which for better or worse, is an overwhelming force in the Korean equities market.
Profits at Samsung down an astounding 60 percent. Sales were down too. And the other big chipmaker SK Hynix looking similar. Both of these companies have been a huge part of Korea's exports, so what caused this decline and what do you see happening in the second quarter?
Korea's exports in March were down 8 percent from a year earlier. And now there's talk about the current account falling into a deficit in April for the first time in seven years. Is this turning into an export crisis?
Now, the trade talks in Washington between the U.S. and China. Reports are saying that there's a deal in the works that would get China to make several big commitments by the year 2025.
What's in the agreement, and what issues are they still working on?
We'll have to leave it there today, Dr. Kim. Thanks again for coming in and sharing your insights today.
