With U.S. President Donald Trump hosting Israel's Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday,... Trump signed a proclamation formally recognizing the contested Golan Heights, as part of Israel.
President Trump had previewed the decision to sign the proclamation in a tweet last week,... but Monday's move formalized the policy.
Trump says the signing will promote Israel's ability to defend itself and to have a strong national security,... something the president says "should have taken place many decades ago".
Israel captured the Golan Heights from Syria during the Six-Day War of 1967 and formally annexed the territory in 1981, but has not been recognized by the international community.
