Trump stresses joint military exercises too expensive; S. Korea should contribute more financially

U.S. President Trump has also expressed his view on joint military exercises with South Korea.
He reiterated his previous view that the exercises are too expensive,... and South Korea should contribute more to them.
Park Ji-won has more.
During the press conference following the summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un,... U.S. President Trump also mentioned the issue of joint military exercises with South Korea.
Responding to a question about whether the U.S. will resume the military exercises or keep them frozen,... Trump stressed that the joint military exercises were canceled because of the high costs,... hinting that he doesn't have willingness to resume the exercises as of now,... unless South Korea pays more.

"We spend hundreds of millions of dollars on those exercises, and I hated to see it. I thought it was unfair. And frankly, I was sort of the opinion that South Korea should help us with that. You know, we’re protecting South Korea. I think they should help us with that. So those exercises are very expensive."

He also said flying strategic bombers from Guam is really expensive.
This could be interpreted as Trump's dissatisfaction over the Seoul-Washington defense cost sharing agreement signed earlier this year,... where the cost of using strategic assets was excluded from the negotiations.
However, the bilateral defense cost agreement was actually meant to pay for the salaries of South Korean employees at U.S. military bases in South Korea, and other logistics or construction fees.
Trump also said that NATO should contribute more financially when it comes to cooperative defense activities with the U.S.
Last June,.. during a press conference following the first-ever summit between North Korea and the U.S. in Singapore,... Trump made a surprise announcement that the U.S. would suspend major joint military exercises with South Korea,... calling the war games expensive and provocative.
