1. Bael (Bael Patra or Bilva leaf) is considered as a sacred item in India and Bangladesh.

2. The leaves of Bael are commonly being offered to Lord Shiva as part of worship and traditional rites.

3. While performing these rituals the thick portion near the stem called Bajra is removed compulsorily. Also stale leaves and one with spots or holes are not worthy to be offered to the deity.

4. Besides this, the Bael leaves also needs have 3 even leaflets that signifies the three eyes of Lord Shiva.

5. Hindus believe that Shiva is the deity of health and Bael is his favorite herb, which is why it is also named Sivadruma.

6. The eminence of the Bael Patra is such that a complete shloka containing eight verses is composed to praise it. Bilvastakam is recited while offering Bael Patra to Lord Shiva

7. Bael leaves, fruits and root are used in tonics and other Ayurvedic medicines. It is also consumed as food in the remote villages.
