The legend says that once Gajendra was once grazing through the Rtumat garden when he stumbled into a lake.

When Makara (the powerful crocodile) saw Gajendra fall into the pond, he attacked him by fiercely catching hold of his leg. Gajendra's efforts to escape from the Makara's clutches was in vain.

When all hope of rescue faded away, Gajendra called out to Lord Vishnu’s name and composed the famous shloka, “Gajendra Stuti”.

Lord Vishnu himself seated on the Garuda and appeared before him as a rescuer. When Gajendra saw the god arriving, he whole-heartedly started praising him, by holding a lotus up in his trunk as an offering.

Lord Vishnu was pleased with his determination and with his Sudarshana Chakra, he decapitated the Makara. At the same time, Gajendra also surrendered himself before the god.

After this, Lord Vishnu told them about the two curses which were passed during Satya Yuga.

The first curse was condemned to a great king named Indradhyuma by Sage Agastiar for not welcoming the sage, who was reborn as the Gajendra.

Meanwhile, the second curse was given to a celestial Gandharva for disturbing a sage's Tapasya, who took the form of Makara.

The souls of both Indradhyuma and Gandharva then appeared before the god in their real form and Lord Vishnu granted them salvation.
