1. Parayan is a Sanskrit word which means reading and being involved with a holy book (mainly Hindu scriptures).


2. Mostly the devotees pick the Purana entitled to their Ishtadev, which means preferred deity of their choice.


3. They believe that by reading or listening to their preferred Khanda or Charitra with devotion, all the wishes are fulfilled.


4. Parayan can be carried out as a Saptah Parayan (week's reading) or one chapter at a time be read, during the Brahma- Muhurat.


5. The practitioner of Parayan has to give full concentration and is not allowed to speak to anyone during the readings.


6. This worship and reading are believed to be next to meditation by some scholars.


7. Some also believe that one needs to abstain from consumption of food items like onion, garlic, and non-vegetarian edibles.


8. The adherent devotetes recite the holy mantras associated with their favored gods before and after conducting the Parayan.
