1. Gudi Padwa is Marathi name for the festival of ‘Chaitra Shukla Pratipada’ which is celebrated to welcome the Hindu New Year.

2. This day marks the beginning of the traditional Hindu year, hence is celebrated on the first day in the month of Chaitra.

3. It is believed that Lord Brahma created the cosmic universe on this day.

4. The festival is celebrated in different Indian states, especially Maharashtra, where Brahmadwaj or Gudi is hoisted on the doorway.

5. The doorway is also decorated with a ‘Toran’ made up of mango leaves and marigold flowers, followed by performing other traditional rituals.

6. Swastik Rangoli is drawn on the ground below this Gudi and Turmeric and vermilion is offered to it.

7. The festival is known by various names across the country such as Ugadi in Telugu and Yugadi in Kannada.
