1. Matrika were Hindu goddesses who are always collectively depicted in the scriptures and monuments.

2. This group consisted seven or eight Demi Goddesses, who were respectively called
Saptamatrika or Ashtamatrika.

3. Lord Vishnu created this destructive force of Matrika, to assist Lord Shiva in a combat against
demon Andhaka.

4. In Shaktism, they are described as deities assisting the Goddess Shakta in her fight with demons.

5. The names of these Matrikas are Brahmani, Vaishnavi, Maheshvari, Indrani (Aindri), Kaumari, Varahi (Vairali ), Chamunda (Chamundi ) and Narasimhi.

6. Scholars stated that these deities are Shakti (power) of the prominent Hindu Gods and primarily revered for their divinity.

7. Scriptures described them as Shaiva goddesses, who in later times got associated with a sect of Shiva.

8. They are mentioned in Rigveda, as a group of seven divine sources who control the preparation of Soma.

9. The stone sculptures of Matrikas in shrines or caves emphasized on their maternal as well as
destructive features.

10. Saptamatrika is notably worshiped in South India, whereas Ashtamatrika is venerated in Nepal.
