Pompeo visits Iraq to reassure U.S. commitment to Arab allies
  • 5 years ago
U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo has made a surprise visit to Iraq, reassuring the country's leaders that Washington remains committed to the fight against the Islamic State Group.
His trip to the Middle East comes amid confusion over changing messages from the Trump administration about a planned U.S. troop withdrawal from Syria.
Pompeo is on a mission to calm fears among America's Arab allies that the U.S. is abandoning the region.
The secretary's stop in Iraq comes two weeks after President Trump made a Christmas visit to U.S. troops based there.
That trip was criticized by many Iraqis for its failure to include a meeting with the country's leadership.
