Unconscious US F-16 pilot saved by Auto-pilot

A declassified footage from the US Air Force shows the moment when an F-16 test pilot passed out in mid-air due to G-LOC. The F-16 pilot was flying over US southwest as a part of a training exercise on 5 May.

The pilot, whose call sign is Ocho, was performing basic fighter manoeuvres when the plane hit about 8.3 G (in G-Forces) in turn.

The jet began to steeply nose-dive without warning from 17,000 feet to under 5,000 feet. The mid-air drama took place in less than 20 seconds.

Ocho’s instructor Major Luke O’Sullivan, who was flying next to him, can be heard yelling ‘RECOVER!’ to the pilot during the nose dive.

At that point, the Auto-GCAS kicked in and started pulling the jet out of the nose dive with seconds to spare.
