Kurds warn of massacre by Islamic State in Syrian border town
  • 10 years ago
Turkey's military keeps watch on the Syrian border town of Kobani, where Islamic State insurgents are bombarding the town's outskirts with artillery fire.

Kurdish fighters trying to drive them back, are warning of a massacre in the making, and Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu says Turkey's forces are on standby.

(SOUNDBITE) (Turkish) TURKISH PRIME MINISTER, AHMET DAVUTOGLU, SAYING:

"We wouldn't want Kobani to fall. We welcomed our brothers who came from Kobani. We'll do whatever we can to prevent this from happening."

..and all the while, refugees fleeing Islamic State continue to stream across the border, while the militants encircle Kobani with tanks.

For Turkey, the stakes are getting higher, and Ankara is being forced to reevaluate its role... as Islamic State tightens its grip just across the border.
