Syrian Kurds teach Yazidis to fight Islamic State
  • 10 years ago
They're seeking revenge... from those who forced them out of their homes, killed their relatives and kidnapped their women and girls.

These young Yazidis are learning how to fight against Islamic State militants.

With the help of the Kurdish People's Protection Units, they managed to flee northern Iraq and cross into Syria. And now, here they stand... at a military training camp in a Kurdish town.

(SOUNDBITE)(Arabic) DISPLACED YAZIDI FROM SINJAR, SHEIKH KHALAH SHEIKH ALYAS, HEAD OF TRAINING CAMP, SAYING:

"Some of these people have come from refugee camps and others have come directly from the mountain after leaving their families at the camps. They came of their own free will."

In the sweltering heat, Syrian Kurds teach new recruits how to use RPG launchers, among a variety of weapons. This, along with fighting tactics and how to properly set up an ambush.

All for the fight against radical Islamists who have violently swept across northern Iraq, murd
