Islamic State: militants will take Kobani says U.S. as Kurds in Turkey riot over Turkish inaction

The northern Syrian border town of Kobani is set to fall to ISIS despite coalition airstrikes that rocked the area repeatedly throughout the day.

The town itself is now mostly deserted and ISIS fighters were photographed inside the town on Wednesday.

Kobani sits just kilometers from the Turkish border and while Turkish tanks and military personnel watched over the battle from a hilltop, there are as yet, no indications the Turkish military is willing to cross the border and directly confront the militants.

Kurds in Turkey have been outraged at the Turkish government for what they see as a failure to protect Kurds in Kobani from what many expect to be a massacre of the town’s Kurdish defenders should it fall into the hands of Islamic State militants.

On Wednesday riots broke out in Kurdish regions of Turkey. The riots turned into gun battles with riot police that left 19 protesters dead.

A U.S. government spokesperson said yesterday that Kobani will likely fall to ISIS and that the town is not at present a priority for the U.S. coalition.

Meanwhile, in a foreshadowing of what’s likely to come -- the black flag of the Islamic State could be seen flying from a building in the center of the besieged town.
