STORY: Thousands of Kurds marched to the Turkish-Syrian border in the southeast province of Cizre on Sunday to show solidarity with Syrian Kurds as security forces used water cannon and smoke grenades to quell the crowd.

Demonstrations started peacefully as thousands gathered near the border to attend a rally organized by the pro-Kurdish, Peace and Democracy Party. Clashes broke out when demonstrators began marching towards the border and crossed into Syria.

Police and military forces fired smoke grenades as water cannon was sprayed on protesters hurling stones.

The Syrian conflict has complicated Turkey's efforts to make peace with the PKK, designated a terrorist group by Ankara, the United States and European Union but for the past year engaged in a peace process with the Turkish state.
