As thousands of Chilean students marched in Santiago on Thursday (April 11) to press demands for education reforms, clashes erupted between police and hooded protesters.

Riot police used water cannon, tear gas and paint balls as protesters hurled rocks and other objects.

Police detained some protesters at the scene.

Students are demanding free and quality education for all Chileans. It was the first major education protest this year.

The massive march, organized by the Confederation of Chilean Students, a secondary school organization, was also joined by workers backed by the central CUT union group, college professors, healthcare workers, workers from the ministry of education, the parenting group, the Coordination of Parents and Guardians, Corpadre, among others.
