FOOTBALL paid tribute to The Queen on Thursday night with a minute of silence and black armbands in memory of Her Majesty.

Buckingham Palace announced the death of Queen Elizabeth II after the royal family gathered at Balmoral.

Later, Manchester United hosted Real Sociedad and West Ham played at home against FCSB.

And in both games fitting tributes were paid to The Queen after it was confirmed that the games would go on.

A statement from Man Utd read: "Following instructions from the FA and UEFA, tonight's UEFA Europa League match against Real Sociedad will take place as planned at Old Trafford.

"A minute's silence will be observed before kick-off to allow teams, match officials and all in attendance to pay their respects to Her Majesty, the Queen.

"Both teams will wear black armbands and the Old Trafford flags will fly at half-staff as a show of our utmost respect."

Following the Queen's death, Old Trafford flew its flags at half-staff as fans reached the ground.

And the fans who were already in the stadium saw the coverage on the screens in the esplanade.

When the teams came out ahead of the game, the black armbands were visible on both sets of players.

And all the billboards around the ground had been blown out.

At the London Stadium, West Ham adopted the same measures for their match.

And the minute of silence in both stadiums was perfectly respected before kick-off.

Then, at halftime, BT Sport decided not to show any advertisements, as they simply broadcast a black screen with "BT Sport" written on it until coverage returned.

Earlier in the evening, a minute's silence was held before the second half of Arsenal's match against FC Zurich in Switzerland.

That happened minutes after his tragic death was announced.
