Arsenal players, staff and fans paid tribute to Queen Elizabeth II following her tragic passing on Thursday night during her match against FC Zurich. The Buckingham Palace announcement came during the match, and plans were quickly made at halftime to pay her respects.

The players came out again with black armbands, while the entire stadium did its part in a minute of silence after the news. Arsenal fans then chanted the national anthem shortly after, showing their support throughout the game in the opening stages of the second half.

"The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral tonight and return to London tomorrow," the Buckingham Palace statement read.

Queen Elizabeth II was the longest-reigning monarch in British history and the world's longest-serving female head of state. She reigned for more than 70 years and celebrated her Platinum Jubilee this year.

On her death, the Queen's eldest son and heir, Charles, the former Prince of Wales, became King of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms.

No official details have been released about what will happen in the coming days. The Queen will receive a full state funeral, as is traditional to commemorate the death of a monarch when the nation enters an official 12-day period of mourning.
