COVID-19 cases are surging in Japan.
Japan's public broadcaster NHK reports that, on Saturday, Japan reported a record number 3-thousand-881 infections,... and an all-time daily high of 64 deaths last Friday.
A former minister of transport died on Monday, making him the first incumbent lawmaker to die from the virus.
To make matters worse, Japan on Monday detected the South Africa-linked variant for the first time.
In response, Japan will only allow Japanese nationals and foreign residents to enter Japan, and only if they can show a negative test taken 72 hours prior to departure.
