The United States on Wednesday saw its highest number of COVID-19 deaths since the pandemic began earlier this year.
Reporting over 3-thousand deaths in a single 24 hour period,... the country is suffering record hospitalizations, as well.
But there is hope as the FDA is on the brink of approving the emergency use of a vaccine.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
On Wednesday,... the United States surpassed another grim milestone in its battle against COVID-19.
Three-thousand-53 Americans died from the virus,... the most since the start of the outbreak.
The previous record was set just last week,... when the country reported 2-thousand-885 deaths.
According to the COVID Tracking Project,... a record 106-thousand-688 COVID-19 patients were hospitalized,... breaking the record set the previous day.
By comparison,... during the pandemic's peak in spring,... hospitalizations were below 60-thousand.
The U.S. continues to lead the world with more than 15-point-5 million cases,... and over 290-thousand deaths.
More Americans have died from COVID-19 this year,... than the amount who died in combat in both world wars.
With the desperate need for a vaccine,... the FDA's advisory committee met on Thursday to discuss emergency use of the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine,... and are set to make a recommendation on whether it should be given authorization.
The committee, which consists of independent experts,... is expected to discuss the data generated during the vaccine's late-stage trial throughout the day,... before voting.
The United States is the only country that requires the public vetting of data before pressing ahead with emergency use authorization.
