S. Korean gov't to scrap new Gimhae Int'l Airport expansion project

A plan approved four years ago to expand Gimhae International Airport in Korea's southeast, is likely being scrapped.
A state committee announced the results of a feasibility test and cited safety and environmental issues and a lack of thorough communication with the local government in the decision-making process.

Back in 2002, the need to add a new air gateway into the southeast region of South Korea was first brought up, after a jet crashed into the nearby Dotdaesan Mountain.
The Park Geun-hye administration came up with a plan in 2016 to build an additional airstrip at Gimhae International Airport.
But the plan is now on the verge of being scrapped.
An inspection committee from the Prime Minister's Office announced the results of its feasibility study on Tuesday...which concluded that the project "needs to undergo a fundamental review."
"The problem regarding noise and any environmental issues will continue to increase. Therefore, the plan for the new Gimhae airport requires significant improvements, and now remains insufficient in dealing with future changes..."
Based on four categories safety, noise, environmental and facility issues the committee said it needs to re-calculate the number of households affected by the problem.
The committee also highlighted insufficient communication between the transportation ministry and the nearby Busan city government, as the building of a new airstrip would require the demolition of part of a nearby mountain in the area.
In light of the committee's recommendation to abandon the Gimhae project, plans have already begun for a special bill seeking permission to construct a completely new airport on Gadeok-do Island in Busan.
"The Ruling Democratic Party aims to finish construction by the year 2030 while the main opposition party is agreeing there's no other option and will actively consider the proposal."
