For the first time since the U.S. and Taiwan cut off official ties back in 1979, a senior U.S. State Department official has visited Taiwan.
U.S. Undersecretary of State for Economic Growth, Energy, and the Environment Keith Krach arrived in Taiwan on Thursday and will attend the memorial service for former President Lee Teng-hui, known as Taiwan's "father of democracy", on Saturday.
Krach is also expected to discuss economic issues with the Taiwanese government, which is seeking a free-trade deal with the U.S.
Meanwhile, China said on Monday that the U.S. should stop all official exchanges with Taiwan if it wants to prevent serious damage to U.S.-China relations.
