The funeral and burial ceremony for South Korea's first four-star general was held Wednesday at the National Cemetary in the city of Daejeon.
General Paik Sun-yup , a hero of the Korean War who led troops in key battles and contributed greatly to the modernization of the country's armed forces, passed away last Friday at the age of 99.
His funeral was held after a five-day mourning period at Asan Medical Center in Seoul.
Those paying their respects at the funeral included Defense Minister Jeong Kyeong-doo and the commander of U.S. Forces Korea, General Robert Abrams.
The service was presided over by Army Chief of Staff General Suh Wook, who said the South Korean army will continue doing its utmost to protect the land that Paik and his comrades had defended with "blood and tears."
General Abrams, in his funeral address, said General Paik was one of the people that helped forge the ironclad South Korea-U.S. alliance and build the foundation for the South Korean military.
The U.S. ambassador to South Korea, Harry Harris, also took part in the funeral, and condolences were sent from the U.S. State Department.
Spokesperson Morgan Ortagus said in a statement that Paik's service during the Korean War was emblematic of the fight for the values of freedom and democracy, values that both the U.S. and South Korea uphold to this day.
The U.S. National Security Council also tweeted its condolences Sunday, saying South Korea is a prosperous, democratic republic today thanks to Paik Sun-yup and other heroes who put everything on the line to defeat Communist invaders in the 1950s.
