'불볕더위' 중부지방 곳곳에 폭염특보… 서울 올들어 가장 덥다

Now turning our focus to the scorching heatwave which gripped South Korea today.
The nation's capital, Seoul recorded its hottest weather for June in over 60 years,… with the mercury hovering around a sweltering 35 degrees in some central regions.
Our Kim Jae-hee has this report.
With the sweltering conditions pushing Monday's temperatures beyond the mid-30s in many areas, the summer heatwave has gripped most of South Korea's inland regions.
"Seoul saw its hottest day of the year so far on Monday,… with temperatures reaching 35-point-2 degrees Celsius at 3PM."
Monday saw the hottest weather in the capital for late June in 62 years,…since June 24th 1958 when temperatures topped 37 degrees Celsius.
Heatwave advisories have been issued in some inland regions,... such as Seoul, Gyeonggi-do, Gangwon-do, and parts of Chungcheong-do provinces.
Compared to previous years,… this year's heatwave has come unusually early for Seoul.
Data from the Korea Meteorological Administration shows,... daytime highs in Seoul first topped 35 degrees Celsius in July in 2017, 2018, and 2019.
The Korea Meteorological Administration says the deadly heatwave could last until Wednesday, when showers are forecasted nationwide.
"The current sweltering heatwave is likely to continue throughout Tuesday,... but will slowly diminish starting Wednesday due to atmospheric depression coming from the west. Because of this low pressure, rainfall is then expected to spread nationwide,… and the monsoon season will likely begin."
With South Korea potentially facing what could be one of the hottest summers in decades,... as well as the first summer amid the COVID-19 pandemic,... thorough preparations may be needed to help combat the heat.
