S. Korea's top office hits back at N. Korea's 'rude, senseless' criticism of President Moon

청와대 "김여정 담화 무례하고 몰상식…감내 않겠다"

In a rare move, South Korea's presidential office fired back calling North Korea's conduct rude and senseless.
Let's go live to our senior Blue House correspondent Kim Min-ji.
Minji, the top office convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council this morning just hours after North Korea ridiculed President Moon's call for cooperation and dialogue.
Then, came the strongest statement yet.
That's right, Conn-young.
South Korea's top office said that it will no longer tolerate North Korea's behavior condemning the regime for its rude and senseless criticism of President Moon Jae-in.
It had convened an emergency meeting of the National Security Council, just hours after the Kim Yo-jong's statement,... to analyze the latest developments.
Take a listen.
"It is an act of senselessness to disparage the president's remarks in a rude tone without understanding their purpose at all. We will no longer tolerate any more of North Korea's careless rhetoric, which fundamentally harms the mutual trust between the leaders of the two Koreas."
Kim Yo-jong called Moon's recent message of cooperation and dialogue between the two sides... "shameless sophistry" saying it was devoid of responsibility and filled with flowery words.
The strong response to that from South Korea's top office likely shows that the Moon administration will not be swayed by Pyeongyang's rhetoric and will not overlook attempts to destroy the spirit of past inter-Korean agreements or damage the trust between the two sides.
The developments and the speed at which this is unfolding are a shock no doubt for the Moon administration, which had been reaching out to North Korea. The regime also claimed to have rejected South Korea's offer to send a special envoy to Pyeongyang. I understand that was supposed to be a confidential proposal.
Yes, the top office expressed regret over the North's choice to unilaterally reveal South Korea's confidential proposal calling it unprecedented and senseless.
It said Pyeongyang had deliberately distorted the purpose of the offer and should show basic etiquette.
The North's state media claimed that President Moon had "begged" it to accept the offer which it flatly rejected.
Seoul's top office stressed that North Korea's latest actions will not help the regime,... and that it will be held responsible for anything that happens as a result.
Separately today, President Moon held a luncheon with former unification ministers... as well as his special advisor for foreign affairs and national security to discuss the current situation.
Although details of the luncheon were not disclosed,... Moon likely listened to their opinions and discussed ways to resolve the standoff.
For now, options for a turnaround appear limited,... and the focus likely to be on managing the situation.
Back to you, Conn-young.
