North Korea has warned the U.S. to stay out of inter-Korean matters if Trump wants to have a successful presidential election.
The consequence for meddling with inter-Korean affairs could be another provocation from the North.
Our Hong Yoo talked to an expert to find out more.
North Korea has warned the U.S. to keep to its own state affairs instead of commenting on inter-Korean relations, or else, it'll face "terrible" consequences.
The director general of the North Korean foreign ministry's American affairs department, Kwon Jong-gun, made the comment during an interview that the North's state run Korean Central News Agency aired on Thursday.
This comes after the U.S. State Department said it was disappointed at North Korea's recent move to sever all official communication links with South Korea, and that it wants the regime to return to cooperation and diplomacy.
Kwon said there's no time for the U.S. to play South Korea's "grandfather" as there's already enough to discuss between Pyeongyang and Washington.
He added that staying out of inter-Korean matters would help the U.S. have a successful presidential election.
"The influence that the Korean peninsula has on the U.S. presidential elections is small. But Trump, who is losing support for failing to stop the spread of COVID-19 and with the protests over the death of George Floyd, is trying to emphasize his accomplishment in halting North Korea's nuclear and ICBM tests. But North Korea is warning the U.S. that it could even take that accomplishment away from Trump if the U.S. continues to intervene in inter-Korean affairs."
That "terrible" consequence could mean a provocation in the near future.
The provocation however, could be something other than the launching of a long-range missile.
"Since last year, North Korea has repeatedly said that the world would soon see its new strategic weapon, a weapon that it can actually use. And that weapon could be an SLBM with an engine that uses liquid fuel. The North could show it off during its military parade celebrating the 75th anniversary of the ruling Worker's Party of Korea's foundation on October 10."
The U.S. is known to have spotted the North testing its ICBM and Transporter Erector Launcher in Sain-ri, Pyongsong.
It's not realistic to resume talks between the U.S. and North Korea at the moment.
So experts say North Korea is telling the U.S. to stop bothering them with sanctions and to stop meddling with inter-Korean affairs.
