As new COVID-19 outbreaks flare with the easing of high intensity social distancing restrictions, South Korea plans to request imports of Gilead's anti-viral drug remdesivir to treat COVID-19.
The Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Friday that they will seek import approval from the nation's food and drug safety ministry as a government panel has concluded that remdesivir showed positive results and since there are no other anti-viral medication proven effective just yet.
Remdesivir was originally developed to treat Ebola, but has been found to cut hospital stay by 31-percent and reduce the fatality rate of COVID-19 infected patients by about five percentage points.
