President Moon Jae-in says the government will swiftly push ahead with its so-called "Korean New Deal" as the country seeks to overcome the COVID-19 crisis and become a leader in the digital economy.
President Moon on Thursday met with the heads of companies from nine industries that have been hit hard and called on them to protect jobs and overcome the crisis together.
The government will direct all efforts toward economic revitalization, protecting jobs and expanding the employment safety net. The digital era, that's been sped up due to the COVID-19 outbreak, is requiring more aggressive and swift changes.
President Moon said the government has already drawn up a support package worth 20 billion U.S. dollars roughly 13 percent of the country's GDP to support the country's ailing industries.
He added more help is on its way as the government is preparing a third supplementary budget.
President Moon also vowed to help foster the human resources that will be required in new industries such as AI and future cars.
