The number of global infections continues to soar... now at one-point-five million... some 100 days since China officially reported the COVID-19 outbreak to the World Health Organization in late December.
The majority of the confirmed cases now come from the U.S. where officials cautiously suggested a slowdown in the number of infections, mainly due to social distancing measures.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
The number of COVID-19 infections around the world has now surpassed one-and-a-half million.
Latest figures from Johns Hopkins University show the number of deaths worldwide has soared to some 88-thousand.
Italy has seen the highest number of deaths with some 17-thousand-700.
The U.S. topped the number of infections, surpassing 430-thousand.
The death toll there is at 14-thousand-600.
Despite some states reporting a steep climb in fatalities due to COVID-19... officials in the U.S. have been cautiously saying the outbreak is beginning to slow... citing a slowdown in hospitalizations as evidence that social distancing and other measures are working.
Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo suggested during his daily news briefing on Tuesday... that the state is flattening the curve... while also acknowledging that a recent surge in people dying at home suggests the state may be undercounting the loss of life.
The United Kingdom, which is cited as the next likely epicenter of the virus in Europe,... reported a daily record 938 hospital deaths from COVID-19 on Wednesday... bringing the total to around seven-thousand-100.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is still in intensive care with COVID-19,... but the UK government reported that his condition is improving.
"The latest from the hospital is that the prime minister remains in intensive care where his condition is improving. I can also tell you that he has been sitting up in bed and engaging positively with the clinical team."
Britain's lockdown, which has been imposed until April 16, is likely to be extended as officials say the outbreak there has not even reached its peak.
