The South Korean government has announced big new investments in Alzheimer's research over the next 9 years.
The health ministry announced today that it will be investing about 170 million U.S. dollars starting next year in early diagnosis, prevention and treatment techniques.
The research also aims to develop new fundamental treatments to supplement existing ones, which can only relieve or slow down symptoms.
The government had declared in 2017 that it will develop a nationwide system to support and manage Alzheimer's patients.
Last year there were about 750-thousand patients, a number expected to rise to some 3 million by 2060.
