The 2019 Nobel Prize in Economics has been awarded to Abhijit Banerjee, Esther Duflo and Michael Kremer, on Monday, for their work on fighting global poverty.
Duflo is a French-American who becomes only the second female and the youngest to win the economics prize.
Kolkata-born Banerjee, who's also Duflo's husband, and Kremer are both from the U.S. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences said that their work showed how the problem of poverty can be broken down into smaller and more precise questions in areas like education and healthcare, making it easier to tackle the global issue.
