Just like the Nobel Prize in Medicine,... this year's prize in the category of physics went to three scientists.
The award was given to a trio who discovered new facts about the formation of black holes.
Lee Seung-jae reports.
The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences on Tuesday announced the winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Physics.
"The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has today decided to award the 2020 Nobel Prize in Physics with one half to Roger Penrose for the discovery that black hole formation is a robust prediction of the general theory of relativity. And the other half jointly to Andrea Ghez and Reinhard Genzel for the discovery of the supermassive compact object at the center of our galaxy."
According to Hansson,... the discoveries revealed "the darkest secrets of the universe",... and the fact that black holes actually exist.
Penrose,... who's a professor at the University of Oxford,... used to work with the late Stephen Hawking,... and showed that black holes are a physical reality,.... while proving Einstein's general theory of relativity.
Genzel and Ghez both discovered a supermassive black hole in the center of our Milky Way.
With the announcement,.... Ghez,... who's a professor at University of California,... made history,... becoming just the fourth woman to win a Nobel Prize in Physics.
Lured into science thanks to the moon landings,... Ghez says the mysteries behind black holes triggered her interest,... and later her studies.
"I think black holes, because they're so hard to understand, is what makes them so appealing. This idea that there are objects that represent the breakdown of our understanding of the physical world and where you get this mixing of space and time for me, that those are the things that intrigue me about black holes."
Just like the winners of this year's Nobel Prize in Medicine,... the three Laureates will share this year's prize of 1-point-1 million U.S. dollars.
The winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry will be announced on Wednesday.
