For the first time the South Korean Navy has picked a female commander to lead its Chung Hae Unit's aviation fleet... which departed for the Gulf of Aden earlier today.
The unit is reportedly highly likely to participate in a U.S.-led coalition in the Strait of Hormuz if Seoul accedes.
Kim Ji-yeon reports.
A ceremony was held on Tuesday to mark the dispatch of South Korean Navy troops to the Gulf of Aden... amid speculation the unit may also undertake U.S.-led missions in the Strait of Hormuz.
The 30th batch of the Chung Hae Unit carrying some three-hundred troops departed on the 44-hundred ton destroyer Kang Gam Chan from the southern port city of Busan... to conduct overseas missions... for six months starting September.
The Navy said those missions include anti-piracy, protection of South Korean vessels and support for safe navigation of the vessels.
And for the first time since the unit's deployment in ten years... its aviation group is led by a female commander.
"It's a great honor to be given such a responsibility, and to be called for duty as the first female Commander of the Chung Hae Unit's aviation group. I'll do my best to complete all missions thoroughly and swiftly."
Though Seoul's defense ministry said it has not received any official request from the U.S. to forge a coalition to protect freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz... local media outlets have cited that the unit is most likely be tasked with the mission if Seoul accepts Washington's request.
This is the fourth deployment for the Kang Gam Chan.
During the past ten years, some nine-thousand troops of the 30th batch of the Chung Hae Unit have been dispatched... and some 22-thousand-400 vessels have been guided by the unit up until July this year.
