A committee in the U.S. House of Representatives has passed a resolution... highlighting the importance of three-way cooperation among South Korea, the U.S. and Japan.
It calls for constructive and future-oriented relations between Seoul and Tokyo.
Kan Hyeong-woo reports.
The House of Representatives Foreign Affairs Committee underscored the importance of a strong U.S. alliance with South Korea and Japan,... as well as trilateral cooperation in the pursuit of shared interests.
That was the message delivered in a House resolution adopted on Wednesday local time,... amid the growing trade spat and historical row between Seoul and Tokyo.
The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Eliot Engel expressed concerns over the fractured ties between the two Asian countries... and stressed the importance of trilateral cooperation.
Engel urged both South Korea and Japan to find a way to move forward,... to restore not only their relationship, but also their ability to work with the U.S.
The resolution reaffirmed the importance of a strong relationship between Seoul and Tokyo for America's diplomatic, economic and security interests.
It added the three countries must also work with the UN Security Council and other UN member states... to fully enforce sanctions against North Korea.
The resolution also called for mutual efforts from Seoul, Washington and Tokyo to support and uphold a rules-based trade and economic order in the Indo-Pacific region.
The U.S. Senate had previously adopted a similar resolution in April.
Meanwhile,... the 26th Korea-U.S.-Japan Trilateral Legislative Exchange Program is scheduled to take place in Washington next Friday.
There, lawmakers from the three countries are expected to discuss ways to resolve Japan's trade curbs and heightening tensions between Seoul and Tokyo.
