South Korea is in the semifinals of the FIFA U-20 World Cup... after beating Senegal in its quarterfinal match on Saturday.
The dramatic win,... marks the first time in nearly four decades that Korea's under-20 side has reached the final four of the tournament.
Our Yu Joonhee has our top story.
In a heart-pounding contest,... South Korea knocked out Senegal in the FIFA U-20 World Cup... after the two sides were all tied up after 120 minutes of regulation time.
The team's youngest player Lee Kang-in,... an emerging La Liga starlet... who plies his trade for Spanish club giant Valencia FC,... scored the first goal for his side and was also heavily involved in two others.
However,... South Korea did find itself on the brink of elimination,... before defender Lee Ji-sol leveled the score at 2-2... with a header in stoppage time during the second-half.
Forward Cho Young-wook... put his side up 3-2 six minutes into extra-time,... before Senegal scored a last-gasp equalizer of its own,... in the dying seconds of extra time.
There were even more nervy moments for the Korean side during the penalty shootout,... after its first two kickers failed to hit the net.
But,... Team Korea successfully converted all three of their following spot kicks,... including an effort by Oh Se-hun,... which came after he was initially denied by the Senegalese goalkeeper,... but he was judged to have come off the line before the shot was taken.
Oh didn't miss with his second attempt,... and following a save from South Korean keeper Lee Gwang-yeon,... and an airmailed shot from Cavin Diagne... Team Korea found itself celebrating on the pitch... for a trip to the final four.
The U-20 side,... will take on Ecuador on Tuesday... as they look to extend their historic run in the tournament,... in the hopes of booking their place in the U-20 World Cup Final.
