S. Korea beat Japan 1-0 to reach quarterfinals of U-20 World Cup

For all South Korean football fans, the FIFA U-20 World Cup match early this morning was well worth losing sleep over.
With a dramatic, but super narrow win over arch rival Japan in the round of 16, South Korea advanced to the quarterfinals. The last time Team Korea made it to the best of 8 was 16 yars ago.

The last time South Korea and Japan met at the U-20 World Cup,... Japan defeated South Korea 2-1 after extra time to advance to the quarterfinals.
Fast forward 16 years, and the latest crop of upcoming South Korean football stars took their revenge by knocking Japan out at the same stage of the tournament at Arena Lublin on Tuesday night.
The two sides were deadlocked until the 84th minute when forward Oh Se-hun popped up with a header to make it one-nil... and booked South Korea's ticket to the quarterfinals.
South Korea had a little help from the Video Assistant Referee.
In the 51st minute,... midfielder Yuta Goke's rebound was initially thought to have given Japan the lead,... but after video review, another Japanese player was ruled offside.
Japan also had a great chance to score in the 78th minute, but the shot hit the post to the relief of the South Koreans.
After South Korea's last gasp goal, Japan scrambled to get an equalizer to at least send the match to extra time,... but South Korea's goalkeeper Lee Gwang-yeon made another key save in the dying seconds.
South Korea now faces Senegal in the last eight on Saturday at 8:30PM, local time.
It will mark South Korea first U-20 quarterfinal appearance since 2013.
The country's best showing at the U-20 World Cup was a 4th place finish in 1983, but South Korea has not gone past the quarterfinals since.
