South Korean virtuoso pianist Sunwoo Ye-kwon is back home for a nationwide recital tour.
He's won more international prizes than any other Korean.
The tour will take him to 10 cities, starting this Thursday.
Lee Min-sun has this story. South Korean pianist Sunwoo Ye-kwon is holding the first national recital tour since he became the first Korean pianist to win the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in 2017.
The program includes pieces by Clara Schumann, her husband Robert Schumann... and Johannes Brahms.
To mark the 200th anniversary of Clara Schumann's birth, the tour is titled "My Clara."
Frau Schumann's works are less well known than those of her husband, who was one of the greatest composers of the Romantic Era, but she is said to have been a major influence on both her husband and Brahms.
Sunwoo says he was not so fond of Clara Schumann's pieces in his early 20s, but now he finds her work more attractive and says it has influenced him more.
"Clara Schumann was someone with so many different thoughts and characteristics in her head. I’m not quite like that, but as a musician, I do live with a lot of emotions. I've felt the naivite of childhood. I've felt like a storm, and even been crazy some times."
Sunwoo has won a total of 8 international competitions, the most of any Korean pianist. But he say he's focused on the music, not the accolades.
"I wanted to show a more serious side as a musician and artist instead of relying on these titles. For this recital in particular, I wanted to focus on the composers. The power of music is the emotions that stay with you for a lifetime, so I wanted to concentrate on that."
He said the program might be difficult for audiences, but he hopes people will enjoy the music and the atmosphere, find happiness and comfort in it. The tour will take Sunwoo through 10 cities, starting May 16th in Ulsan.
