제주 4.3사건 71주년, 일본 새 연호 의미와 한일관계 전망

More than 7 decades have past since the tragic April 3rd Jeju Incident,... but the incident still touches the heart of many here in Korea... with the wounds of bereaved families still unhealed.
Today we shed new light on the Jeju incident which resulted in the worst civil tragedy in Korean history, second only to the Korean War.
For that, we're joined by law professor Song Se-ryeon at Kyung Hee University.
Thank you for coming in today.
1. Could you start us off by telling us a bit about the historical significance of the April 3rd Jeju Incident?
2. The Defense Ministry has expressed regret and condolences for the bloody military crackdown during the Jeju incident. This came for the first time in 71 years. Why do you think there were no apologies for such a long time, and what does this first apology imply?
3. The Korean government has officially admitted the fact that there was a large-scale violent crackdown and apologized for that, but the apology didn't lead to any actions deemed necessary for the victims and their families. In fact, a special act on April 3rd Jeju was tabled in 2017 but is still pending at the National Assembly. Can you tell us what the special act is and why it's still pending?
4. President Moon Jae-in also promised to get down to the bottom of the Jeju incident while also vowing to resolve the compensation issue. Prime Minister Lee Nak-yon also echoed the president by saying he will steadily increase the support for the victims and their families. What are some of the remaining obstacles that are hindering the realization of these promises?
5. Another thing President Moon promised, is to discover the truth about the May 18th democratic movement. The Moon administration, unlike previous administrations, is going all out to correct Korea's modern history that are considered distorted. How do you see the government's efforts to shed new light to these movements?
6. Staying with the May 18th movement, ex-president Chun Doo-hwan attending a trial in libel case... for defaming priest Cho Bi-oh in his memoir published last year. The next hearing is set for next Monday. What are some of the remaining issues regarding his case?
7. Some lawmakers have made strong or inapproriate comments, if you will, about the May 18th movement, stirring up controversy in the political arena. To this, some are voicing concerns that legal measures are necessary to prevent such mishaps from occurring again. What's your opinion on that?
