Experts point to possible faulty MCAS software in crashes of Ethiopian Airlines and Lion Air jets

While nations around the world are grounding Boeing's 737 Max 8 aircraft following the deadly Ethiopian Airlines crash,... Boeing says it has finalized an upgrade to a system that experts are pointing to as the possible cause of the deadly accident.
Kim Hyo-sun reports.
The fatal Ethiopian Airlines crash last week and the crash of the Lion Air jet in Indonesia in October last year both involved a Boeing 737 Max 8.
The planes ascended and descended and then ascended again,... while flying at speeds well over the normal takeoff procedure.
Experts have raised the possibility of a faulty Maneuvering Characteristics Augmentation System, or MCAS software,... which prevents the plane from descending rapidly amid turbulence.

"What happened in the case of the Lion Air flight in Indonesia was that the pilot was fighting against the computer software which wanted to drop the nose of the aircraft and then the software would say it's too high and was forcing it down again and eventually there was a loss of control of the aircraft."

To this, Boeing says it has finalized the upgrade of the related software system.
It also explained it was updating pilot training as well,... but specific methods have not yet been disclosed.
Ethiopia's transport minister said Sunday that information from the Ethiopian Airlines jet's black box shows clear similarities to the Lion Air crash.
While the minister didn't elaborate,... Ethiopia will release a preliminary report in 30 days on what happened in the lead up to the crash.
